Question 1

How much does new siding cost in Ontario?

Accepted Answer

For a typical 1,800–2,500 sq ft house in Simcoe County you're usually looking at $18,000–$30,000 for vinyl, $30,000–$50,000 for LP SmartSide, and $40,000–$70,000 for James Hardie, installed. The three things that move the number most are the amount of trim and corners, whether the old siding has to come off, and how much of the house is two storeys. We quote by walking the house, not by the square foot.

Question 2

How much does it cost to reside a house?

Accepted Answer

Residing means stripping the old siding, fixing anything underneath, re-wrapping, and installing new. Expect to add roughly $2–$4 per square foot over a new-build install for the tear-off and disposal, plus any rot repair we find. We always tell you what we found before we fix it.

Question 3

Can siding be installed in winter in Ontario?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with the right product. LP SmartSide, Hardie and steel install fine in cold weather. Vinyl gets brittle below about -5°C and we won't cut it on a frozen job site, so we schedule vinyl for the shoulder seasons. Caulking and paint touch-ups need a few days above freezing, so sometimes we come back in spring to finish those.

Question 4

What's the best siding for Ontario winters?

Accepted Answer

Fiber cement (James Hardie) and engineered wood (LP SmartSide) handle freeze-thaw and snow load best and don't crack. Steel is great near the lake where wind is a factor. Vinyl works but expands and contracts a lot, so installation quality matters more than the product. Around Georgian Bay we also pay attention to the wind-exposed side of the house and upgrade the fastening there.

Question 5

Do I need a permit to replace siding in Ontario?

Accepted Answer

Replacing siding like-for-like usually doesn't need a building permit, but adding insulation, changing window sizes, or working on a heritage property can. We check with your municipality before we start and handle the paperwork if a permit is needed.

Question 6

How long does siding installation take?

Accepted Answer

Most homes take one to three weeks. Vinyl is fastest, Hardie is slowest because every board is heavy and cut with a dust-controlled saw. Soffit, fascia and eavestrough on the same job add a few days. We give you a start date and a finish date before we begin.
