Question 1

How much does a deck cost in Ontario?

Accepted Answer

Pressure-treated runs about $45–$65 per square foot installed, cedar $60–$80, and composite like Trex or TimberTech $80–$120. A 300 sq ft composite deck with aluminum railing typically lands between $25,000 and $35,000. Height, stairs and railing choice move the price more than the decking itself.

Question 2

Composite vs cedar deck — which should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Composite costs more upfront but never needs staining and won't splinter or grey. Cedar looks and smells great, costs less, but needs sealing every two years or it turns grey and checks. For a cottage you visit on weekends, composite saves you the maintenance weekends.

Question 3

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Ontario?

Accepted Answer

Usually yes if the deck is more than 24 inches above grade or attached to the house. We prepare the drawings and apply for the permit as part of the job.

Question 4

Trex vs TimberTech — any difference?

Accepted Answer

Both are excellent capped composites with 25–50 year warranties. TimberTech's Azek line is full PVC and stays cooler in sun; Trex has more colour options at the mid price point. We install both and will show you samples.
